Why You Need Water Filters
Some older houses could have old pipes and plumbing systems that can introduce copper and other contaminants into the water supply. Even though your local water supply is treated, these contaminants may still enter your home as water flows through old, corroded pipes. Filtering your water helps keep these materials out of your drinking water.

FAQs Frequently Asked Questions – Big Berkey Water Filter System How often do I need to replace the Black Berkey Elements Each Black Berkey Element is rated for approximately 3,000 gallons of filtration. With two elements installed (standard configuration), that equals about 6,000 gallons total before replacement is recommended. For a family of four drinking about 2 gallons per day, that can translate to several years of typical use. Actual lifespan depends on your water quality and usage habits. How do I know when it’s time to replace the filters Most users notice a significant decrease in flow rate that cannot be restored with cleaning. If scrubbing the elements no longer improves flow, it’s typically time to replace them. Can the Big Berkey reduce PFAS and PFOA (“forever chemicals”) Yes. Independent third-party testing has shown greater than 99% reduction of PFAS compounds, including PFOA and PFOS. If PFAS contamination is a concern in your area, the Big Berkey system is designed to address it. Does the stainless steel housing affect the taste of water No. The system is constructed from AISI 304 stainless steel, which is non-reactive. It does not alter the flavor of filtered water. Many customers report improved taste in drinking water, coffee, and tea after switching to Berkey filtration. Is the Big Berkey legal in California and Iowa Due to state-specific regulations, the Big Berkey system cannot currently be shipped to addresses in California or Iowa. Does the Big Berkey require electricity or plumbing No. The system operates entirely on gravity. No electricity, water pressure, or plumbing connections are required. Can I use well water with the Big Berkey Many customers use the Big Berkey with municipal tap water and private well water. Water quality can vary significantly from one source to another, so users should evaluate their local water conditions when selecting a filtration solution. Can the system remove fluoride Fluoride reduction requires the optional PF-2 Fluoride & Arsenic Reduction Filters, which attach to the Black Berkey Elements in the lower chamber. Can I add more filters later Yes. The Big Berkey system comes standard with 2 Black Berkey Elements, but can be expanded to 4 elements to increase the flow rate. How fast does the Big Berkey filter water With 2 elements installed: up to 3.5 gallons per hour With 4 elements installed: up to 7 gallons per hour Flow rate is measured with the upper chamber full and decreases as the water level drops. How do I clean the Black Berkey Elements If the flow slows down, remove the elements and gently scrub the exterior with a Scotch-Brite pad under cool running water. This removes surface buildup and helps restore filtration speed. How much space does the Big Berkey require The system measures approximately: 8.5 inches in diameter 19.25 inches tall (in use) The upper chamber nests inside the lower chamber for compact storage or travel. Is the Big Berkey portable Yes. Weighing about 7 pounds empty, the system is easy to transport for travel, RV use, or cabins. What is the cost per gallon of filtered water With proper maintenance, the cost averages approximately a few cents per gallon, depending on usage and configuration – significantly lower than bottled water or short-life cartridge systems.
What Is Special About Berkey Water Filter?
Our unique Black Berkey Elements are made from a proprietary blend of media designed to work synergistically and target specific contaminants, which far exceed the reduction capabilities of filters solely composed of activated carbon or ceramic materials. They are backed by independent third-party testing.
The Black Berkey Elements are independently tested against 200+ contaminants and rated for up to 6,000 gallons per set — among the longest lifespans of any gravity filter element available. They are also economical, averaging just pennies per gallon of filtered water.
Berkey systems equipped with Black Berkey Elements dramatically reduce trihalomethanes, inorganic minerals, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, VOCs, petroleum products, perfluorinated chemicals, rust, silt, sediment, radiologicals, and more.
Berkey systems are used every day in homes worldwide by discerning consumers who trust their quality to meet drinking water needs. We recommend replacing Black Berkey Elements every 3,000 gallons (6,000 per set of 2 elements). Elements may require earlier replacement depending on the quality of the influent water.
